What is Grenache?
Also known as Garnacha in Spain and Cannonau in Sardinia, Grenache is one of the most planted red varietals in the world. With likely origins in Spain, Grenache requires hot, dry climates as it is a late-ripening grape. It’s also widely found in France, Spain, Australia, and the U.S. where it has proven itself as a workhorse varietal, but also attractive because of its red fruit qualities.
What are Grenache’s signature flavors, aromas, and taste profile?
Strawberry, cherry, and cinnamon on the nose and palate; Dry, medium-bodied, lightly tannic, and medium acidity. Grenache-based wines tend to be higher in alcohol.
What are some iconic expressions of Grenache?
In Spain (Rioja and Priorat) blended with Tempranillo, Syrah, and Carignan providing wines with body and strength. As the dominant varietal in Chateauneuf de Pape, and in blends throughout France’s Southern Rhone with more finesse. In Provence, Tavel, and Lirac as age-worthy rosé wines. From California’s Central Valley, South Australia, and South Africa as approachable, fruit forward wines.
